Slalom Build Case Study - Leveraging Generative AI for Enhanced Discovery Processes


Opportunity

This case study highlights a significant project utilizing generative artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize the creation of essential artifacts for the discovery phase. These artifacts include persona generation, stories, and epics derived from input problem statements. As a UX designer, my role played a crucial part in harnessing generative AI to enrich the efficiency and depth of insights obtained during the discovery process.


Defining the Value

The integration of generative AI into our discovery
process could yield transformative results for our team and stakeholders. The streamlined generation of personas, stories, and epics significantly reduced time-to-insight, allowing us to iterate and refine our solutions rapidly. Moreover, the AI-generated artifacts can facilitate deeper empathy and understanding among stakeholders, enhancing collaboration and decision-making throughout the design and development lifecycle.

An AI-assisted discovery application can also help to analyze large datasets efficiently, provide personalized insights, automate tasks, ensure scalability, integrate seamlessly with existing systems, comply with data privacy regulations, and continuously refine algorithms based on user feedback and evolving requirements.

 

Research

I collaborated closely with the team to understand the intricacies of integrating generative AI into our discovery process. This involved regular discussions and brainstorming sessions where we explored various approaches and potential applications of the technology. Through these collaborations, I gained insights into the technical requirements, feasibility considerations, and potential challenges associated with implementing generative AI effectively. Additionally, I worked closely with team members to gather feedback, research best practices, and identify suitable tools and frameworks to support our efforts. Together, we established a clear roadmap for integrating generative AI into our discovery process, ensuring alignment with our overall objectives and maximizing the value it could bring to our workflow.

 
Ideation

During this phase, extensive collaboration took place with stakeholders and the agile development team to discuss ideas and ensure alignment with the project's vision. Once consensus was reached and concepts were clarified, I transitioned to creating preliminary designs aimed at visualizing our ideas effectively. Utilizing Sketch, I crafted basic flow diagrams, which were then presented to stakeholders to provide them with a preview of the envisioned user experience. Adjustments were made accordingly based on their feedback.


Solution

My role as a UX designer was paramount in crafting an intuitive interface that seamlessly integrated the outputs generated by the AI models into the discovery workflow. Understanding the unique UX challenges posed by incorporating generative AI, I collaborated closely with engineers to devise a solution that prioritized usability and clarity. Through meticulous research and iterative prototyping, we identified opportunities to enhance the user experience and mitigate potential friction points. By empathizing with end-users and incorporating their feedback, we were able to create an interface that not only effectively showcased the AI-generated artifacts but also facilitated meaningful interactions and insights. This collaborative effort resulted in a user-centric solution that streamlined the discovery process, empowering our team to harness the full potential of generative AI in driving innovation and problem-solving.


Delivery

After finalizing the user experience, I began creating high-fidelity designs and establishing a new design system. This involved defining various components like color schemes, typography, input fields, links, form layouts, and focus states. Once these components were crafted in Sketch and shared on InVision, collaboration with the development team became smoother. Throughout the application development phase, ongoing collaboration with developers allowed us to enhance the user experience whenever needed, ensuring optimal usability and functionality.


Scope of Work Delivered:

Led the project's design efforts, overseeing UX research and design for a pioneering AI-assisted discovery initiative. Formulated and executed an innovative design system customized to suit the project's requirements. Furthermore, established and integrated a comprehensive pattern library reference to enhance the efficiency of the development team's workflow.
